Carbon Offsetting

September 26th, 2008 by john

One of the reasons for the recent silence here in the Vertography blog has been a short trip we took back home to the UK. While there, we also took a side trip down to the beautiful city of Venice, in Italy, for a few days. As a result, we booked two return flights: one between San Francisco and London, and one between London and Venice.

When booking the trans-Atlantic flight, on United Airlines, we were offered the choice to pay for upgrades and given links to partners for booking cars and hotels, but nothing more. When we booked the Venice flights with EasyJet, a UK based low cost carrier, right there on the booking page, in addition to other offers, we were offered the option to buy carbon offsets for our flight.

Cancel In Flight Magazines

August 11th, 2008 by john

The Guardian reports that Emirates airline is taking the in-flight magazines and other on-board paper from their A380 aircraft to save fuel. Apparently this adds up to 2kg (4.4lbs) for each seat, which on a 500 seat aircraft is pretty significant!

The information that would have been in each seat back will instead be available through the in flight entertainment system.

Shower
It seems odd to target the paper though on an aircraft that boasts two showers for first class customers (think about the water needed for a shower!). I guess every little helps, but I must admit I actually enjoy reading the in-flight magazine on most flights I take. Guess I’ll have to remember to bring my own reading materials in future.
