About

Welcome to the Vertography blog! This blog is our way of sharing planet-friendly hints and tips, other green resources we find on the internet as well as our forum to give you information about the ongoing development of the Vertography application.

Who Are We?

Vertography is run by a small team of engineers who care about the environment, and want to make it painless for anybody to live green. We think we can help you see that living green doesn’t need to be difficult, and even better it can save you money; money that is much better spent on enjoying your life.

Walking the Walk

Web servers take a lot of power, and need to be on 24/7 so you can access the site whenever you like. Worse still, they require lots of cooling. So, vertography.com is hosted by iMountain.com in a data center that operates entirely on solar energy. We can’t control what happens once the bits leave our servers, but at least they started life as green bits. Hopefully you’ll be doing lots to make their destination green too.

Most of our development happens in Alameda, which has a city-owned electricity utility and a power mix that is over 85% from renewable sources. We work from shared spaces like cafés, use natural lighting in our offices as much as possible and CFL bulbs when it gets dark. We also use laptops instead of desktops since they consume a lot less power.

Why Vertography?

Vertography is a made up word; a mix of English and French. Vert, is the French for green, and the -graphy suffix means “field of study.” So, vertography is the “study of green” – and that’s exactly what this site is all about!
