Al Gore’s Son Escapes Dying Planet

August 1st, 2008 by john

The Onion reports that Al Gore “launched his infant son into space Monday in the faint hope that his only child would reach the safety of another world.”

The article continues:

“On his new planet, Kal-Al’s Earth physiology will react to the radiation of a differently colored sun, causing him to develop abilities far beyond those of mortal men,” political analyst Sig Schuster said. “He will be faster than a speeding Prius, stronger than the existing Superfund program, and able to leap mountains of red tape in a single bound. These superpowers will sustain him in his never-ending battle against conservatives, wealthy industrialists, and other environmental supervillains.”

The Onion
OK, you got us. It is, of course, an article from The Onion, where news is more fun and less fact. The whole tale is based on the story of Superman, and perhaps there is a message in there about the state of the planet. Clearly, the article exaggerates the scale of the problem today, but left unchecked is it possible that global warming could lead to the death of our planet, and the need for one of Al Gore’s successors to indeed launch his son into space to carry on the human race on another planet?

In all likelihood, Mother Earth will eventually fix the problems we’re causing. What is unknown is how long that might take, and how it might affect us (perhaps she’ll just remove the cause of the problem entirely). In the meantime, perhaps we should all try not to upset her any more than absolutely necessary.

Oh, but let’s hope there’s more valuable information from our time on this planet that those who do leave the earth can take with him than would fit in a Keynote presentation!
